the "best" burgers the city of angels has to offer? we'll see about that. |
curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back
two things about the pug burger @ the hungry cat:
1. chef/owner david lentz’s burger naming pun was inspired by his dog
2. it is the only meat offering at this top-notch seafood restaurant
amongst the assorted raw bar and pescetarian-friendly offerings comes a surprise underdog of a meal. lentz, raised in the mid-atlantic on a strict diet of shrimp+lobsters opened the hungry cat on a bed of oysters and built his empire on his famous lobster roll. finding a need to balance the menu with at least one meat offering, lentz hemmed & hawed until settling at the last minute on a burger. not one to pussy foot around quality eats, he created one of t.h.e. most perfect burgers ever prepared.
grabbing a spot at the bar, we were able to peek through the kitchen to see this compacted patty meet its demise at the hands of a skilled line cook. topped with bacon (made from omjpinchme niman ranch uncured pork belly - hello why are more places not doing this?), blue cheese, avocado, romaine, red onions & the optional fried egg (which we opted FOR - obvi), this towering treat was dripping with juice that soaked right thru the la brea bakery bun thanks to the 8oz patty (yes. take THAT 8oz burger bar) and compendium of sauces including *aioli!* and optional mayo/mustard/2-ketchup combo. exhausting to nibble through and quite a messy meal, but absolutely mind-blowingly delicious in my book. i don’t usually like blue cheese - EVER - but for some reason, it was surprisingly pleasant on this burger.
i wouldn’t eat this on a date and thank god i opted for a more manageable pasta dish (who can say no to house-made pappardelle pasta + sea urchin?), but would def order this to-go or delivered to eat dans la maison amongst the comfort of soap+towels. [if you are in the neighborhood, DO IT]
but speaking of dates, i have to admit this is a wonderful place to impress a gal about town: impressive cocktail selection, accommodating waitstaff, and charming minimalist decor. then check out ivan kane’s cafe wa s next door for late night burlesque and live music!
- burger: 4 out of 5 stars [i am, after all, a carnivore at heart]
- fries: 5 out of 5 stars [jesus h. christ. i have seen You and You look skinny, stringy, and golden-y delicious. xoxo]
overall thoughts: i believe any future late-nite rendezvous with this spot will have to be kept under wraps until i can button my jeans again. sigh.
would i go back?
was offered the chance to the following weekend, but politely declined due to extreme exhaustion. .. perhaps that was the wrong move on my part?
